The compass and the jaleos

The compás is the concrete rhythm that defines the flamenco art, it is specific to each style that is interpreted and that all artists know.

All the artists have to be within the rhythm of each flamenco style, but the percussionists and those who play the palmas, called palmeros, are fundamental to maintain that rhythm to which they contribute ornaments or counter-tempos. The guitar is also used as a percussion element by the guitarist, as well as the feet of the dancers and bailaoras.

In addition to the clapping, other percussion elements are used, such as the knuckles on the table, sticks, castanets or the toque of the cajón. During the show, the artists shout or jalean are exclamations in moments of special emotional tension to recognize the merit or encourage the work of colleagues. Shouting ole during the show is a way of recognizing a brilliant moment and serves as encouragement and motivation.
