The world of the Manila shawl

The majestic Palacio de Linares, home of the Casa de América, presents the exhibition The World of the Manila Shawl: From Asia to Spain, passing through Latin America.. This exhibition will take you on a journey through time that begins in the 16th century, when the route of the Manila Galleon was discovered, a maritime corridor that connected cultures and heritages from the Philippines to Mexico and Spain. The Manila shawl, that embroidered silk garment that became a symbol of luxury and distinction, is the undisputed protagonist of the event.

The exhibition brings together more than 80 historical pieces that include shawls, but also porcelain, folding screens, fans and other objects brought along the maritime route. Among the jewels of the exhibition, the shawls belonging to such iconic figures as Imperio Argentina, Lolita Flores and Olga Ramos stand out. Each shawl becomes a reflection of the interaction between cultures, of the journey that silks and embroideries made from China to America, before arriving in Spain. A unique opportunity to admire a cultural fusion that marked fashion and Hispanic identity.

Dates: October 9 to 25, 2024.
Venue: Palacio de Linares.
